SpaceX has confirmed that Starlink's public beta is operating in the United Kingdom, following its openings in the United States and Canada.

During its January 20 launch webcast, the company said it had expanded the programme to U.K. customers earlier in the month. CNBC's contemporary account records that statement.

This is the date of the company's confirmation, rather than a claim that the first British terminal was activated on January 20. The statement establishes an operating beta in January but does not give the exact first connection date.

For a rural household without a suitable fixed line, the satellite link offers a different way to reach the internet. It still needs a terminal installed at the property, and beta availability should not be mistaken for immediate service at every U.K. address.

That distinction also matters when comparing it with an existing connection. A household with reliable fixed broadband has a different calculation from a property whose only option is a slow or unreliable link.

Our U.K. installation directory covers planning the local setup. A dish still needs a workable view of the sky, regardless of whether the property is eligible to order.
