How Starlink Gateways Work

Gateway antennas connect Starlink satellites to infrastructure on the ground. Optical links between satellites can carry traffic farther before it reaches a gateway, so your connection does not necessarily use the nearest site.

A gateway is different from a point of presence (PoP), where traffic connects to other networks. They may share a location, but a new PoP does not by itself establish a new gateway.

How Many Starlink Gateways Are There?

We do not have a verified current worldwide total. The directory combines dated sources and older records, and it is not a complete inventory of Starlink’s network. Its record count should not be read as a count of operational gateways.

The earlier edition’s operational and construction totals are retired. A licence, installed antennas and confirmed operation are different milestones. We do not turn a planning decision or a photograph into a “live” status.

Sources and Review Dates

Reviewed on October 15, 2026. New entries draw on Ofcom and ISED publications and four directly read r/StarlinkEngineering threads. Each directory entry includes its evidence type, source date and limitation. A review date is not an activation date.

Community entries come from dated site reports and imagery discussions. They have not been independently confirmed by Starlink. We use them to document reported installations, changes and removals, rather than to certify a site as operational.

Earlier records come from the directory last edited on February 10, 2025. Their old labels are shown only inside the details. They have no newly verified direct source.

The map is supplied by its community maintainers. Our page update does not establish when each map marker was checked. Send a dated regulator filing, company statement or original site report if an entry needs correcting.
