Starlink has activated its satellite broadband service in Papua New Guinea, following completion of the country's regulatory and licensing requirements.

The National Information and Communications Technology Authority confirmed the activation in a May 2 notice. It says service became available nationwide at 8 a.m. that day.

NICTA says people who already own terminals can proceed with activation. New customers still need to meet Starlink's equipment and subscription requirements.

The government had reaffirmed its support for a lawful rollout in January. Today's notice moves the story from policy and licensing to commercial service.

That's a useful distinction in a country where satellite internet could serve remote communities. A government supporting the technology and a customer being able to activate it are separate milestones.

We've covered similar market entries before, including Starlink's Albania launch. The next question after availability is usually what the connection costs a local household.

NICTA's activation notice doesn't list a hardware price or monthly tariff. Readers should use the local Starlink order process for a quote rather than assume an overseas price applies.

Installation matters too. Our obstructions guide explains why a workable view of the sky can make the difference between having a kit and having a reliable connection.

For larger deployments, our earlier Community Gateways coverage shows another approach to distributing satellite capacity. It doesn't establish that a gateway product is being deployed under this announcement.

NICTA says it will monitor license conditions, consumer protection, and service quality. Those operating results will give a fuller picture than nationwide activation alone.
