Lufthansa has operated its first flight with Starlink, putting the airline group's January agreement into passenger service.

The August 19 inaugural flight ran from Frankfurt to Rome as LH234. The aircraft was an Airbus A320neo registered D-AINM.

Access is free for Miles & More members and Travel ID users, regardless of cabin. The service is offered under the Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi name.

Up to ten additional A320-family aircraft at Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines are expected to receive the system before the end of 2026.

That's the immediate installation target. The much larger January plan for around 850 group aircraft still runs through 2029.

Lufthansa says most installations will take place at Lufthansa Technik in Berlin, combined with scheduled technical downtime. That gives some explanation for why a fleet agreement takes years to turn into a consistent passenger experience.

For somebody flying tomorrow, the aircraft registration is more useful than the group-wide total. A first A320neo doesn't mean every plane on the Frankfurt-Rome route already has Starlink.

The launch follows British Airways' first equipped flight in March and United's June widebody announcement.

Those milestones also show why it helps to distinguish an airline signing a contract from an equipped aircraft carrying customers.

Our Starlink Aviation guide provides background on the connection. Passengers use onboard Wi-Fi, while the aircraft's dedicated satellite equipment carries the traffic to space.

The next useful measure for Lufthansa will be how quickly the small initial fleet grows. Until then, travelers should check the service offered on their assigned aircraft instead of assuming the upgrade is everywhere.
